Why riding makes such a Huge difference

by NSRDA Coach, Judith

If you’ve spent five minutes at our arena, you already know how amazing our horses are. But have you ever wondered about the actual science behind why riding makes such a huge difference?

It turns out that a horse's movement is practically magic when it comes to therapy. For our RDA riders, just sitting on a walking horse does incredible things for the body and mind.

Here is a quick look at what is happening during every single stride.

The 3D Walk

When a horse walks, its hips move almost exactly like ours do. It creates a rhythm that moves the rider’s pelvis in three ways at once:

• Up and down

• Side to side

• Forward and backward

For someone who uses a wheelchair or struggles to walk, riding gives their body the exact same sensations as walking on their own two feet.

Why It Feels So Good

  • Sneaky Workouts:  Riders have to constantly adjust to stay centred, which builds massive core strength without them even realizing it.

  • Muscle Relaxer:  The combination of the horse’s body heat and the gentle rocking motion is perfect for loosening up tight or stiff muscles.

  • Better Balance:  The constant movement gently challenges the body, teaching riders how to find their centre.

  • Happy Joints:  It gently exercises the hips and lower back without putting any stressful weight on the rider's legs.

Brain Boosts

  • Super Awareness: The changes in speed and direction stimulate the inner ear, which helps riders get a better sense of balance and space.

  • Total Focus: Tuning into a moving animal takes a lot of concentration, which often helps riders focus better at school or home, too.

The Feel-Good Factor

There is something incredibly calming about matching a horse's rhythm. It lowers stress and helps build a massive bond of trust. Watching a rider's confidence soar as they connect with their horse is what RDA is all about!
