Horse Welfare Innovation: Track System Success

By Horse Manager Michelle

At North Shore RDA I have set up a track system for our team of horses. My reasoning for it was because most of our horse team were carrying a bit of extra weight and they are in the more mature age so for me the track system is a perfect addition as it keeps their weight at a good range and gets them moving plus plus helps with keeping those joints more mobile.

The track system set up:

I have set up another fence that runs around and through each big paddock, so the horses have to walk up and down the hill to get anywhere and have to walk around the track to the trough for a drink so are constantly moving. Horses constantly graze, so with a track set up it means they walk a lot more as they graze.

It has been a great benefit for our team, a bit of extra work for poo picking for the volunteers, so it keeps us all a little bit fitter – which is a win-win scenario. Horses in the wild walk many kilometres a day but we have civilised them to small paddocks which can cause a lot of the health issues experienced today, such as horse being overweight, laminitis, bad feet, behaviour issues and more. A track system is the closest you can get to a natural habitat for horses and provides a lot of benefits for them. It has certainly helped our wonderful herd, and we often receive good feedback for how much better the horses are looking currently.

I currently have three tracks set up here at NSRDA and will put in more when we have the funds to do so, it is an expense to set them up but once set up it works great and keeps the horses in much better shape.  I've included an example of a track system below.
