Rising costs put real pressure on our programmes
North Shore Riding for the Disabled exists for one reason — to change lives through the therapeutic power of horses.
Every week our riders experience improvements in strength, balance, confidence, communication, and emotional wellbeing. For many, their RDA session is the most meaningful, joyful, or empowering hour of their entire week.
But providing this impact is becoming increasingly difficult.
Despite the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, the care of our horses, and the passion behind our programmes, the reality is that rising costs for horse care, coaching, facilities, equipment, training, and safety place growing pressure on our limited resources and delivering these life-changing programmes is becoming increasingly challenging. And as we work to expand our programme again in 2026, allowing us to reach more riders who urgently need our support, costs will increase further.
This is why being named the Community Impact Award winner at the He Toa Taua – Harbour Sport Excellence Awards is so meaningful. It publicly recognises the real, measurable difference North Shore RDA makes in our community and has done for the last 50 years. But recognition alone does not cover operational costs.
Without increased sponsorship and donor support, we will be faced with the difficult reality of raising rider fees to meet essential expenses. This is something we are reluctant to do as many of our families are already managing significant financial pressure. Increased fees risk placing therapeutic riding out of reach for people who need it.
