Coach 's Brief

We are halfway through our year already, and I'm sure you are all eagerly awaiting spring and a reduction in mud. I know the ponies, and early morning volunteers are appreciating the warm water wash bay.
It’s well known how horse riding offers a wide range of physical, cognitive, emotional and social benefits. At NSRDA, we enable riders, who for various reasons, require additional support, to access the healing powers of the horse.
Our team of well trained and experienced horses, along with dedicated volunteers, and experienced staff, work with a wide range of riders, helping each individual to meet their goals.
For some, this may be maintaining, or improving strength, balance and flexibility. I have had a parent describe RDA as "therapy in disguise", as she described that her daughter always wanted to come, unlike some other more clinical therapy sessions.
For others, the benefits may be enhancing concentration, and attention. There is no doubt the soothing rhythm of a horses hoofbeats, and swinging gait as they move together through our beautiful trails, is calming, promoting positive emotions and assisting with emotional regulation.
It is now well recognized that contact with horses can promote healing and personal growth, and this is not limited to the riders. Our wonderful volunteers also gain physical fitness, social connection and a sense of belonging, and most of all, the joy that being around our special equine partners brings.
PS I would also like to welcome Kate Tobeck to our coaching program. Kate, one of our volunteers has agreed to study for the NZRDA National Certificate in Equine (RDA Assistant Coach) Level 3, to become a fully qualified NZRDA Coach. Kate will be a big help, adding to our coaching capacity and helping me and our riders.
Thanks for your ongoing support
Judith Finch
