Welcome to Michelle, Our New Horse Manager

By volunteer Sarah Perry
We are delighted to introduce Michelle as our new Horse Manager. With a lifetime of equestrian experience and a passion for horse training, Michelle brings a wealth of knowledge to our team.
Early Life and Equestrian Beginnings
Growing up with a shepherd father, in the Manawatū, Michelle was immersed in the world of horses from a young age. She recalls being placed on a horse at just two years old, learning to ride as the horse drank from a trough. Her early experiences laid a strong foundation for her diverse equestrian pursuits.
Diverse Equestrian Pursuits
Michelle’s equestrian journey began with English riding and eventing. She sought new challenges and transitioned to Western disciplines, dedicating several years to rodeo events like barrel racing and roping. She enjoys cowboy challenges and barrel racing and is conducting a three-month barrel racing clinic. Her expertise extends to training horses, particularly those with behavioural issues, where she emphasises understanding and communication.
Family and Personal Life
Family is central to Michelle’s life. She has a son and a granddaughter over one year old and cherishes their special bond. Her family, including her mother, brother, and sister, all live nearby, and her brother is also involved in farming.
Joining Our Team
Michelle has long aspired to volunteer but was previously committed to full-time work. Now, with more flexibility, she is eager to contribute her skills to our organisation. Managing 40 acres and nine horses, Michelle is excited to engage with our community and finds the experience rewarding and fulfilling.
Connect with Michelle
Beyond her role with us, Michelle is active in the equestrian community. She is developing a Facebook page to share instructional videos and insights on barrel racing and cowboy challenges. She is also involved with the New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Association, which promotes the sport and oversees nationwide competitions.
We are thrilled to welcome Michelle to our team and look forward to her positive impact on our horses and community.
